Hard Freeze Takes Hold in Aurora as Overnight Lows Fall Into the 20s

Afternoons stay in the 50s this week, but the station forecast — Tuesday 57 and 28, Wednesday 55 and 27, Thursday 52 and 26 — puts every night well below freezing.

Aurora is entering the part of November when fall ends at night, even if afternoons still feel mild. The station forecast calls for Tuesday at 57 degrees with a low of 28, Wednesday at 55 and 27, and Thursday at 52 and 26. Three consecutive hard freezes will finish tender plants, frost windshields across the city, and test any home that has not yet been winterized.

The household checklist is familiar because it works. Disconnect hoses, protect outdoor faucets as the home requires, and bring in or cover anything that a night in the 20s would ruin. Check that furnaces are running cleanly before colder weather arrives, and keep space heaters away from bedding, curtains, and clutter if they come out this week. Small steps now prevent the burst pipes and emergency calls of deeper winter.

Morning travel deserves the same respect. Moisture can freeze overnight on bridges, overpasses, and shaded pavement, including stretches of I-225, I-70, and Parker Road. Drivers may not see thin ice in the dark, particularly on ramps and on less-traveled roads toward Watkins and Bennett. Slower speeds, longer following distance, and a few extra minutes are the appropriate response to a clear, cold morning.

Aurora's open places feel the freeze first. At Cherry Creek Reservoir, Aurora Reservoir, and the Plains Conservation Center, wind across prairie and water makes the effective cold sharper than a sheltered neighborhood thermometer suggests. Walkers, runners, and students waiting for buses need real winter layers this week, not the light jacket that sufficed in October.

No storm is in this forecast, and residents should use the quiet weather well. Put the scraper and gloves in the car, stock a basic winter kit, check on neighbors who may need help with a furnace or a ride, and treat these freezing nights as the rehearsal they are. On the eastern plains, real winter rarely sends a warning this clear twice.
